Anegudde Vinayaka Temple

The hill of the elephant-faced lord.

The Anegudde Vinayaka Temple at Kumbhashi, a little north of Kundapura, is one of the most popular Ganesha shrines on the Karnataka coast. The name Anegudde means "elephant hill", and the temple is counted among the seven sacred Mukti Sthala sites of the region.

Legend

According to tradition, the site is linked to the Mahabharata and to the sage Agastya; Lord Ganesha is believed to have helped the sages here, and the deity is worshipped as the remover of obstacles. The presiding image is a standing Vinayaka.

The Mukti Sthalas

Anegudde is one of the seven Mukti Sthala pilgrimage centres of coastal Karnataka, a circuit that also includes shrines such as those at Kollur, Kota, Shankaranarayana and Koteshwara — many within or near the Kundapura taluk.

Festival and worship

The temple's annual festival and rathotsava draw large numbers of devotees, and special prayers are offered for success and the removal of obstacles. The hill setting gives fine views over the surrounding coast and groves.

Visiting

Kumbhashi lies just off NH-66 and is an easy stop between Kundapura and Maravanthe, often visited together with Kollur.
